The Great Barrier Reef is getting closer to Brisbane…

Okay, maybe not the reef itself, but the barrier reef experience will be more accessible in the near future. Bundaberg will soon be the gateway to the reef for thousands of tourists from South-East Queensland and around the world. Already a must-visit for many local tourists, Bundaberg is known for its famous rum distillery, beautiful beaches, and as a viewing destination to see sea turtles lay eggs and hatch. A new three-level pontoon will be anchored 400m from Lady Musgrave Island.

The 36m x 12m structure will feature underwater accommodation, on-deck glamping, a viewing area, and the opportunity for divers and school groups experience the best of the Great Barrier Reef. Managing directorBrett Lakey from Lady Musgrave Experience, the company that commissioned the pontoon, said “…the pontoon will be perfect for the drive market from Brisbane”.

The new Lady Musgrave pontoon is expected to attract 16,000 visitors annually, boost the local economy by close to $2m a year, and employ up to 14 people. With the help of Queensland House Removers – a Brisbane-based company – the massive pontoon was recently moved from the construction yard at Bundaberg port, to deeper waters in the Burnett river. It was no mean feat; sitting at 70-tonnes for the complete structure, the pontoon was carefully transported by Queensland House Removers’ specialised removal trucks. Moved in three sections, the new pontoon will now be assembled and fitted in position on the river. Once ready, it will be tugged out to sea, where it will find a new home in the lagoon.
